IS NEW LIFE POSSIBLE?

Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 11:1-6; 32-37

Intro: Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus declares many things about himself. “I am the bread of life (Jn 6:35). I am the light of the world (8:12). I am the gate for the sheep (10:7). I am the good shepherd (10:11). I am the way, and the truth, and the life (14:6). I am the true vine (15:1). I am the resurrection and the life”. Our Lenten journey ends on Easter with the great proclamation that Christ is Risen. But here, on this fifth Sunday in Lent, our scripture selections focus on renewed life in this world. The passage from Ezekiel is a fascinating one indeed. It was to bring assurance to Ezekiel and the Children of Israel that God can do all things -- even bring life to those dry bones in the valley. The dry bones represented Israel itself, a nation that had fallen away from God. But their God was mighty enough to bring them new life! Our Gospel lesson today records what many consider to be the greatest of the miracles of Jesus, the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Both of these passages carry the message that new life in God is possible. That’s the message we get -- its the message we need -- but is it the message we really believe. Is new life possible in the here and now as well as in the unknown eternity? Many of us have experienced a real Spring season somewhere, so we do know something about “new life.”
